IN THE BEGINNING...

Vannie walking across the Mississippi.

Dave doing the same in a different spot.

One hiking trail...a very nice one, I might add.

Another trail...not so nice, but adventuresome.

oops...Vannie forgot the bug spray!

Charles Lindbergh's boyhood home in Little Falls, MN

Me taking in the sights...or is it sites!  In this instance, I think it could be either.

…there was a river, and God said, “It is good”.
As you know, Vannie, Dave, and I started our lives together in Louisiana.  That is where the Mississippi River is big and muddy.  Well, when we arrived at the Itasca State Park in Minnesota, V and D could hardly wait to hike down to the headwaters of the Mississippi…that’s where it all begins.  That song, Ol Man River, kept going over and over in my head…
Ol’ man river,
Dat ol’ man river
He mus’ know sumpin’
But don’t say nuthin’;
He jes’ keeps rollin’
He keeps on rollin’ along.
Vannie gave me a long hard look as they headed on their hike.  I really think she could hear me singing.  That little smile she gave me said it all.
When they returned, they talked about the how small the river was and how clear it was.  This was way different than the one we all know and love.  It was just a baby…a little tike…a beginning.  It wasn’t sayin’ nuthin’, but it knows a lot of sumpin’, and we are proud to know that it jes’ keeps rollin’ along.
V and D love to hike….and this park had lots of trails.  But the mosquitoes…oh, the mosquitoes…they are terrible.  One day they left without the spray, and almost got eaten alive.
Another cool place we visited was Charles Lindbergh’s boyhood home in Little Falls, MN.  Vannie and Dave enjoyed walking around the area.  The home wasn’t open for visitors, but Vannie said it was still neat to get to walk where Lindbergh had walked.  I could even see the house from where I was parked.  I like it when that happens.
…and God said, “It is good.”

It's about Time...Someone came to see me!!!

OK…It’s about time someone came to see me.  Darlene and Al Ashley originally from Minnesota…lived in Lafayette 30 years ago…now living back in Minnesota…came to me.  It’s been 30 years since Vannie and Dave have seen and visited with them.  They went to the same church while Darlene and Al were in Lafayette…First Methodist.

So…when Dave got their number from a friend, he gave them a call.  They live in St. Paul, but were at their camp about 30 minutes from us.  Can you believe that!!!  Vannie and Dave hightailed it over to their camp and had supper with them and took a delightful pontoon boat ride on the lake.  When Vannie was telling me about it, she got so excited, because this is the second couple they know that has a pontoon…the other being Claudia and Orville Steen in Louisiana. Al cooked hamburgers on the grille and boiled some of that good Minnesota corn.  Darlene fixed a big fruit salad with a rhubarb pie for dessert. Vannie said Dave couldn’t stop hugging himself.  She has been feeding him mostly fruits and veggies, so he thought he had died and gone to heaven.  He told me he ate 2 burgers and 2 pieces of pie. Pigged out!!!

The next day V and D met Darlene and Al at a flea market nearby.  Kettle corn, fried cheese curds (sounds terrible, but delicious), hot chocolate, stuff and more stuff, and lots of fresh veggies.  Vannie bought more corn (surprise surprise), beets, bell peppers and kohlrabi (they said it tastes like cabbage).  After the flea market, they all came to see me.  I could hardly wait to meet Darlene and Al.  They were just as nice as could be…and, of course, they loved me.

It has been wonderful at the Minnesota Airstream Park.  We have made more friends…eaten more new stuff…seen sites…rested…recouped…and enjoyed life.  We came here to stay one week, but have stayed three.  Tomorrow we are heading to where the Mississippi begins and then on into Canada from there.  One the Road Again!

No matter where we travel, it seems we can always find somebody we know…and that’s what happened this week.  Vannie and Dave’s good friend from Scott, LA, Paul Begnaud, spends the summers in St. Paul, MN.  He has kids that live in this area, and he, himself, lived here many years ago.  Paul is the one guy that literally taught Dave the drapery business…the ins and outs, the ups and down.  Paul is 90 years young.  You wouldn’t believe it by the way he looks and gets around.  He drives and cooks and loves life!  A lesson for us all!

We were about an hour from St. Paul in our campground in Clear Lake.  I held the fort down while V and D made the trip over to see Paul.  Vannie said the gumbo was on the stove simmering when they arrived.  Paul had brought chickens and seasonings from Early’s Grocery Store in Scott.  It was truly a taste of home.  Paul’s son, Blake, and daughter-in-law, Kathy was there, also, to give us the full Minnesota welcome.  Dave said they felt like royalty.

After eating, Blake and Kathy drove V and D down to Stillwater, MN.  Vannie said it was a sweet little town right on the St. Croix River.  The St. Croix is the north-south boundary water that separates Minnesota from Wisconsin.  They walked around in the downtown area checking out antique shops, a German Christmas store, and along the river walk.  The river was actually lapping over the sidewalk.

V and D spent the night with Kathy and Blake in their basement.  Being from Louisiana, basements are just something V and D have read about in books.  So to actually get to sleep in one was a treat.  They were up and at ‘um the next morning.  Paul was already calling about his “pain perdu” breakfast he was preparing for them.  He called to tell Kathy to please bring a “bucket” of milk.  Guess he thought they were going to milk the cow before coming over.

Of course, Vannie said the “pain perdu” or French toast was out-of-this-world…made from whole milk, butter, sugar, lots of vanilla, white bread (thick slices) and fried in butter.  Dave said he could feel his arteries clogging, but, at that moment, who cares!

After breakfast, Paul was ready to show V and D around St. Paul.  Although they could have had a nap after that breakfast, they piled in his car and headed out to see the sites.  The Indian mounds along the Mississippi, the Ramsey County Court House with the huge Indian statue inside, the beautiful cathedral, the gorgeous old neighborhoods, Leather Works (Kent Begnaud’s business, another son of Paul’s), and the Capital were all part of the tour.  They ended up at a cute little restaurant for a late lunch.  Paul wanted them to try the special which was a Juicy Lucy Burger.  V and D just couldn’t do it.  After eating gumbo and French toast, they just had to have a little lettuce.  I thought that sounded a little wimpy, but to each his own.

Wow…what a visit…V and D headed back to me and Clear Lake with full tummies, full hearts, and happy memories.

OLD MCDONALD HAD A FARM

E-I-E-I-O...

...with a root cellar

...and open windows

...and a wife

...and a hay loft

...and a wagon

...and a water pump

...and an outhouse...and cows

...and some sheep

...and some chickens

I think I would have liked to go on this adventure with Vannie and Dave.  It really looks like a cool place and one I would have enjoyed...but, alas, I would probably have had to stay in the parking lot from the look of things, so just as well I stayed put in my space in the park.  I have made so many friends here, it is going to be hard to leave.

Vannie said that this was the Oliver Kelley Farm in Elk River, MN.  It was established by Oliver Kelley around 1860.  Mr. Kelley was the founder of the first successful farming organization, the Grange.  Just a little background info...

V and D were both reminded of childhood experiences after visiting here.  Dave told me a story about his Aunt Lavada.  He and his brother would stay there while their mom and dad worked.  It was off the road on the way to Farmerville.  She had a big old house with a water pump, chickens, garden, etc.  Lots of places where little boys can roam and have fun.

Vannie reminisced about life on the farm at her Aunt Aunean's and at her Grandmother Burns'.  Both  hold special places in Vannie's memories...cows, chickens, gardens, outhouses, root cellars. The sight, sounds, smells, feelings, and tastes all came alive at the Kelly Farm in Elk Falls, MN.

Isn't it great to have such wonderful memories to fall back on!!!  It just goes to show ya that the world is not so big after all.

Vannie had hoped for a winning number during the cake walk...no such luck.

No wins in Bingo either!

Cooking right next to the corn field!

My wheels are still.  My body is quite. I’m resting and recouping at the Minnesota Airstream Park in Clear Lake, MN.  It is about 30 minutes from St. Cloud.  We came here to spend a week, but that week has gone into two weeks.  It is so pleasant…quite, cool, shady, and just airstreams. Yep…I’m lovin’ meeting new folks…the Internationals, the Sovereigns, the Classics, the Flying Clouds.  Just plain fun!
The park is arranged in circles. There is circle A, B, C, and D.  Each circle has a commons area in the middle for get-togethers.  There is a swimming pool, laundry, and clubhouse…and if you stay long enough, you can rent a garden plot and grow your own veggies.  Each airstream spot has a screen room.  Some people own here and some, like us, rent by the day or longer.  One thing I was surprised about is the mosquitoes.  Vannie says she thinks that they are worse than the mosquitoes in Louisiana.  I know that is hard to believe, but it’s true.  I’m sure glad they can’t get their little stingers in me.  I’m so tired of seeing V and D itchin’ and scratchin’ and swattin’ and slappin’. The maintenance guy sprays twice a week to try to keep them in check.
Vannie and Dave will hardly admit it, but they are enjoying the down time, too.  They have been so darn busy for months that this will recharge their motors.  Vannie has done some sewing, reading, cooking, walking, and talking on the phone.  Dave has played his piano, fixed a leak in my roof, put up a new towel rack in the kitchen, cleaned out his sock drawer, finished his book, took naps, and took naps, and took naps.  Vannie even got out the Skip-Bo cards.  Dave is really not a card player, but he has actually played several games just to satisfy Vannie.  The TV reception is not too good here, so I’m thinking Vannie might pull out the Rumi-Cube next.  Dave might go screaming down the road if that happens.
One day last week, D and V left me here talking to my neighbors, and they headed out to St. Cloud to visit some gardens…the Munsinger & Clemens Gardens.  John and Ann Joyner from Texas, who have a place in the airstream park, invited D and V to go with them.  The Clemens gardens include a rose garden, a rest area garden, a formal garden, a perennial garden, and a treillage garden.  Just down the hill from these gardens are the Munsinger Gardens.  They include paths, ponds, fountains, plants…all nestled along the banks of the Mississippi River.  We had lunch afterwards in a restaurant overlooking the river.  The restaurant featured a huge roll called a popover.  Vannie said it was larapin.
Sunday D and V were off to the races (not literally).  I thought they were supposed to be resting.  Oh well…I am not moving from this place until next Monday.  They can go and go and go and wear themselves out…but I am going to be rested when it’s time to leave.  Dave had read in the paper about the Pearl Lake Festival in, where else, Pearl Lake.  It was sponsored by the Holy Cross Catholic Church of Pearl Lake.  The first activity on the list for Sunday was “polka mass with Laverne and the Starlites.”  Well…you can see why they were off to the races.  Dave could hardly wait to experience this.  Vannie said it was out in the middle of a bunch of corn fields.  They arrived just in time for the mass.  It was outside under a tent, and Laverne and the Starlites were on stage.  Dave said it was better than he could have imagined…a polka mass…just never know what you are going to fine in this good ole US of A.  On the lunch menu was grilled pork chops with fresh sweet corn or hamburgers and beer.  There was bingo, BB gun shoot, silent auction, country store and cake walk.   I think this is the kinds of events that V and D like best.  They talked way into the night about the people they saw, the songs they sang, the salsa they bought, the food they ate, and the cake they wanted (but didn’t win).
Resting and Recouping is not a bad thing…it’s a must!

Hankinson, ND…Population  about 1000…3 Churches (2 Lutheran, 1 Catholic)… 1 grocery store… 1 fire station… 3 bars (amazing how that number coincides with the number of churches)… 1 grain elevator (I have decided they are in every small town in middle America)…train tracks…1 bakery…1 city park …1 dairy bar (always hoppin’) …1 small motel/café…and one very large convent... Small Town Bliss!

Hankinson is one of those sleepy little towns where you half way expect Andy, Aunt Bee, and Opie to appear around the corner any minute.  I loved staying two nights in my hookups in the City Park.  It was very relaxing after our busy week at the International Rally.  The only sounds I could hear were the squeaking of the swings in the park as the kids would swing back and forth…back and forth.  Remember those sounds…Small Town Bliss!

Those sounds were blasted out of the ballpark one afternoon.  Every fire vehicle in Hankinson was blaring their sirens.  Vannie and Dave rushed outside half expecting to see the whole town ablaze.  Well, here they came.  One fire truck after another…sirens screaming…then at the end of the line was a truck full of high school softball players…they were celebrating being state champs…  Small Town Bliss!

Sunday morning V and D attended church at one of the Lutheran Churches.  It had beautiful stained glass windows and friendly people.  When they shook hands with the pastor on the way out, he gave them a beautiful glass cup as a thank you for coming.  Monday morning they headed for mass at the Catholic Church.  Guess they were trying to cover all their bases.  LOL  Upon arriving, they could not find the location of the mass.  It was probably in some small chapel, so they just sat in the big sanctuary and soaked in the beauty…Small Town Bliss!

One afternoon, Vannie decided to visit the convent.  It was a Provincial Motherhouse for the Franciscan Sisters.  There were about 30 Sisters that lived there full time.  Vannie loved exploring the gift shop and visiting with several of the nuns.  After leaving, she had a brainstorm.  Vannie belongs to a Facebook site called Art Abandonment.  Artists find peace and joy in secretly abandoning a piece of their original art.  She knew what she had to do.  She was going to paint something special for the convent and abandon it on their doorsteps.  And guess what she painted…a pair of white tennis shoes.  I don’t think I would have every thought of that for a convent.  She painted designs and words that she thought would be fitting for the location.  Then she walked back down and left them on their doorsteps with a note about the “Art Abandonment” plan.  Of course, all of this was anonymous.  She told me that she has visions of a sweet little nun wearing her painted shoes to the shower or just in her room.  A song comes to my mind…”Make someone happy, Just make one someone happy, And you will be happy, too”…Small Town Bliss!

V and D did take a side trip to Fargo, ND.  They visited a wonderful art museum, Rourke Art Gallery Museum.  The temporary exhibit called “Signed.Sealed.Delivered.” was fantastic.  Vannie was so excited about seeing the permanent collection which included a Rochenberg,  a Miro, a Warhol, a Lichtenstein, and a Dali…pretty neat for a little museum in North Dakota .

Bye, Bye, Hankinson…Might not ever see you again…
But some great memories of …Small Town Bliss
